Highlights of Magento 2.4.9 - beta1 Release

Notable fixes in Beta 1 include:

  • Malformed REST API requests now return a proper 400 error instead of a 500 Internal Server Error
  • Orders can no longer be created via API without a billing address
  • Customer email confirmation via WebAPI paradox resolved — accounts can now be activated through the API
  • Attribute validation between REST API and Admin is now consistent
  • GraphQL customerCart now correctly returns product attribute values based on the store header language

What’s new in Magento 2.4.9 - beta releases?

Adobe Commerce 2.4.9-beta1 advances platform modernization with PHP 8.5 compatibility, Symfony 7.4 LTS support, and Apache ActiveMQ Artemis as a strategic RabbitMQ alternative, while expanding Braintree payment options with new local payment methods and express checkout improvements, and delivering 560+ quality fixes. Here are the notable highlights of this latest release:

1. Security fixes

Security improvements have been consistent across every release in the 2.4.9 cycle. Here’s what has been patched so far:

  • CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA validation is now enforced for customer account creation via REST and GraphQL APIs, matching the protection already in place for the storefront form.
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA) configuration has been simplified: admin users now only need to configure only one of the merchant’s enabled 2FA providers to access the Admin panel, rather than being required to configure every enabled provider before signing in.
  • Bulk async API performance degradation introduced by a previous security patch has been resolved.

2. Platform & Infrastructure

2.4.9 represents a significant infrastructure modernization across every release milestone:

  • PHP 8.5 is now fully supported, PHP 8.4 remains supported and PHP 8.3 is permitted for upgrade-only scenarios. PHP 8.2 is now no longer supported.
  • Apache ActiveMQ Artemis is now an alternative to RabbitMQ across Commerce release lines 2.4.6 through 2.4.9-beta1, including Adobe Commerce Cloud deployments.
  • Full Valkey 8.x support is in place, including complete CLI command parity with Redis.
  • OpenSearch 3.x is now fully supported, while maintaining backward compatibility with OpenSearch 2.x.
  • Composer 2.9 compatibility has been verified.

3. Framework & Dependencies

Magento 2.4.9 - Beta 1 brings a significant round of under-the-hood modernization, replacing legacy dependencies with more maintainable, future-proof alternatives.

  • The deprecated Zend_Cache component has been replaced with the Symfony Cache component, improving cache performance and maintainability and ensuring PHP 8.x long-term compatibility.
  • The latest Symfony dependencies are Symfony 7.4 LTS, with all custom classes extending Symfony core updated to align with the latest method signatures and type declarations
  • The third-party carlos-mg89/oauth library now become native PHP OAuth functions
  • The New Relic reporting module now supports New Relic’s NerdGraph GraphQL Change Tracking API to deliver rich deployment metadata and regional endpoint support for US and EU.
  • JavaScript library updates: Chart.js updated to 4.5.0, jQuery Validate to 1.21.0, jQuery UI to 1.14.1, Less.js to 4.2.2, Moment Timezone to 0.5.43, Underscore.js to 1.13.7, and Uppy file upload library to 4.13.4.

4. Admin UI

There are 2 key improvements to the Admin that directly reduce time spent on repetitive tasks and give content teams better tools for reviewing staged changes before they go live:

  • The Catalog Price Rules grid now includes an Actions menu, helping merchants handle multiple rules at once, in line with the bulk actions already available for Cart Price Rules.
  • The staging preview feature now supports admins to view content staging previews on browser-simulated mobile devices.

5. Braintree

Beta 1 delivers the most comprehensive Braintree update in the 2.4.9 cycle.

Express Checkout

  • Google Pay and Apple Pay express pay sheets now support promo and offer codes, so that standard discounts also apply to express checkout customers.
  • Apple Pay is now available on Chrome and Firefox, and customers can complete payment by scanning a code with their iPhone.
  • The PayPal Express shipping callback is now moved to server-side, enabling dynamic shipping methods and real-time cost calculations directly in the PayPal modal.
  • A PayPal Contact Module for U.S. merchants lets buyers view and update their email and phone number during PayPal Express flows, with contact details stored on the Commerce order.

New Payment Methods

  • BLIK payment method is added for Polish shoppers, while Pay Upon Invoice (BNPL) option is a new one for German customers
  • ELO card type is now supported by Braintree Payments.

Card Vaulting & Management

  • Google Pay cards can now be vaulted via the customer account area.
  • The Real-Time Account Updater (RTAU) automatically updates vaulted Visa, Mastercard, and Discover card details when cards expire or are replaced, minimizing failed payments.
  • A Braintree Portal link is now shown on order details in the Admin, allowing direct cross-referencing of transactions without logging into both systems separately.
  • The Content Security Policy (CSP) has been updated to support the latest Cardinal (3-D Secure) integration requirements.
  • The Braintree payment extension is now compatible with PHP 8.5.

Magento 2.4.9 introduces PHP 8.5 compatibility, Symfony 7.4 LTS support, a native MVC implementation replacing Laminas, Apache ActiveMQ Artemis as a RabbitMQ alternative, full Valkey 8.x support, significant Braintree payment enhancements including new local payment methods, and 891+ quality fixes across all alpha and beta releases to date.

Is Magento 2.4.9 ready for production use?

Not yet. As of March 2026, Magento 2.4.9 is in beta. Beta releases are suitable for staging environment testing and compatibility auditing, but should not be deployed to live stores. The General Availability (GA) release is planned for May 2026.

How long will Magento 2.4.9 be supported?

Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 carries a three-year support window from its GA date. This means merchants who upgrade will have access to security patches and updates through approximately 2029.

Magento 2.4.9 supports PHP 8.3 (for upgrade purposes), PHP 8.4, and PHP 8.5. PHP 8.2 is no longer supported. If you are currently on PHP 8.2, planning your PHP upgrade ahead of the GA release is strongly recommended.

Will my extensions be compatible with Magento 2.4.9?

Compatibility varies by extension. Use the alpha and beta period to test all extensions in a staging environment and engage your extension vendors about their 2.4.9 compatibility timelines.

What happened to TinyMCE in Magento 2.4.9?

TinyMCE has been replaced by HugeRTE, an open-source WYSIWYG editor, due to end of support for TinyMCE 5 and 6 and licensing incompatibilities with TinyMCE 7. Merchants using custom editor configurations or plugins should test HugeRTE compatibility before upgrading.

Magento 2.4.8 focused on GraphQL API improvements, PHP 8.4 compatibility, and MariaDB 11.4 support. Magento 2.4.9 goes further with PHP 8.5 support, Symfony 7.4 LTS, replacement of multiple legacy dependencies (Zend_Cache, Laminas MVC, TinyMCE), expanded Braintree payment features, and ActiveMQ Artemis support — making it a more substantial infrastructure release overall.
